Ormiston Primary School
The vision for Ormiston Primary School was to design and create an Innovative Learning Environment. In collaboration with ASC Architects we created a structure that embraces a new era of learning and embodies the modern values and purpose of the bespoke school environment.
As the structural, civil and geotechnical engineers for this iconic project, we brought the foundations of the school to life. Inside you will find an administration zone, a large gymnasium and recreation area, a library and four modern learning habitats. Forming a central hub of the school is the dedicated learning centre for Kelston Deaf Education Centre students.
In response to the school's desire for inquiry-based learning, we created four innovative learning areas. Each one is the size of three traditional classrooms and allows several classes to use the same space at the same time. Large open zones allow for an open play layout with flexible spaces suitable for a range of different uses.
Our role as the building services engineers was to make the structure habitable by enabling movement, communication, comfort and safety. Every feature of the school was designed to minimise energy consumption and operational costs, which is reflected in its 5-Star Green Built rating. We maximised the use of natural ventilation, natural lighting and mass cooling features of the structure to complement the passive elements of the school's architecture. Our planning also included room for further expansion as the school's roll grows.
