Modernising Newmarket Rail Station and improving connections with the area
This high profile $30m redeveloped station blends into its surroundings and provides an inviting and safe urban environment for commuters and passers by.
The redevelopment modernises Auckland’s Newmarket Rail Station and improves its connection with the surrounding areas. It achieves an inviting and safe urban environment through an iconic transport interchange in the truest sense.
Opus provided architectural, asset management, M&E and structural engineering services to the project.
The station upgrade was a high profile and complex project. It involved many stakeholders, a constrained urban environment with limited access, and tight demands on budget and programming.
The end result actively blurs the building/public space interface. The Remuera Rd link bridge connects the road to the station concourse. Dramatic steel portals frame the link bridge creating a sense of enclosure. Vertical glazed screens to both sides provide security and weather screening, and full width solid roofing provides additional shelter.
The light and airy concourse is the focal space of the station. Escalators, stairs and accessible lifts serve each of the two platforms below. The concourse contains a ticketing booth, public toilets and a staffroom.
The floating roof canopy with its central skylight is supported by elegant tree like columns. It encloses the concourse and parts of the platform level with high louvres and glazed walls to provide protection from sun, rain and wind. Perforated ceiling panels help absorb noise and improve the overall acoustic environment.
